Gloucester Lantern Procession & Christmas Light Switch-On Returns on Saturday 19 November.

Gloucester's stunning Lantern Procession & Christmas Light Switch-On returns this year on Saturday 19 November at 4.45pm.
This year's artists cohort are teaming up with local schools to produce a literary themed lantern procession based on "Alice in Wonderland" featuring characters from the 1865 novel by Lewis Carroll.
Inspired by the amazing artwork of Sir John Tenniel, the lanterns this year will feature some of the most iconic characters from Alice's adventures including the Cheshire Cat, the Mad Hatter and tea party, the Queen of Hearts, the White Rabbit and his stopwatch, and other wonderland-themed creatures and creations.

The procession will be a feast for the eyes and the ears. Local samba band Ola Samba will return with their spectacular drumming, and the Gloster Gladiators Scout Band will return to the festivities leading the schools in their procession.

The six schools involved are:

  • Cooper’s Edge School working with artist Stephanie Reeves
  • St James' C of E Junior School working with artist Dee Moxon
  • Upton St Leonards C of E Primary working with artist Alison Cockcroft
  • Grange Primary Academy working with artist Amy Peck
  • Hillview Primary School working with artist Harriet West
  • Clearwater C of E Primary working with artist Maya Wolf

Join us at Kimbrose Way Triangle/ Southgate Street corner at 4:45pm. The parade will pass through Gloucester City Centre and makes its way to Gloucester Cathedral as the Christmas lights are switched on overhead. After the procession there will be a carol service at the cathedral – all are welcome to join this festive finale.

Procession route: Blackfriars, Ladybellegate street, the quay/commercial road around to Kimbrose Triangle, Southgate Street, Westgate Street, finishing at Gloucester Cathedral
