About

Set in a beautiful valley, nine large caverns of this former iron ore mine and natural cave system have been opened to the public. Large scale commercial mining ended at the end of the Second World War in 1945 but iron ore in the form of ochre is still mined here used for artists pigment; ochre pigmentation gives the caverns a distinctive orangey-red colour.

The Caves are enjoyed by families and visitors of all ages, winding passageways open into impressive caverns, giving the Caves a mysterious atmosphere, illustrated by the fact that Dr Who has now been filmed here four times over the past few years.

Those with a taste for adventure can try one of the caving activities advertised on the Caves website and go beyond the public pathways, crawling, climbing and getting dirty; an exhilarating experience and a great idea for birthday treats.
