About
Llanthony Secunda Priory is the remains of a once large and important Augustinian Priory which was founded in 1136 after canons fled from Llanthony Priory in Monmouthshire, Wales. The site has since been classified as a scheduled monument with several Grade I and II listed buildings that played an important role in Gloucester’s history for over 900 years. Miles FitzWalter of Gloucester, 1st Earl of Hereford, provided the land for this second Llanthony Priory to be built, hence its name ‘Secunda’ meaning secondary. It served as a retreat for the monks of the first or ‘Prima’ Llanthony Priory who had been under persistent attacks by the local population. By the 16th Century it had become an independent priory and one of the largest Augustinian houses in England, owning 97 churches and 51 well-appointed manors.
Today, the Priory is a popular cultural venue, brought back to life after nineteen months of restoration and conservation work, supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund (NLHF). The two main buildings, dating from the 15th century often play host to weddings, corporate events, and private functions. Check out our website for more information.
Its large grounds offer a relaxing green space for people to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and the reimagined medieval courtyard garden is a draw to many with its wonderful floral displays, herbaceous beds, and wildlife visitors.
The Clement Café offers take-away service during open days serving hot and cold beverages, a selection of ice-creams and snacks.
