Volunteers' Week 2021: How Locals are Making a Difference to our City

Volunteers’ Week is a time to say thanks for the contribution millions of people make across the UK through volunteering. Here at Visit Gloucester we wanted to celebrate Volunteers’ Week by highlighting the ways in which locals are making a difference to our city through volunteering.

Below we heard from Isobel who told us about her experience volunteering at Milton Avenue Green Space.

I love being outdoors so one of my favourite volunteering roles has been helping at my local park.  It’s quietly tucked away at the end of the road but is home to a beautiful array of different trees, plants and insects.  The area has been transformed over the last few years thanks to Big Local funding, with residents deciding to focus some of the budget to partner with Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust to learn some vital skills about conservation and biodiversity.  This has led to a dedicated team of volunteers who meet once a month to work on a different part of the site.  A lot of these volunteers are teenage boys who have a keen interest in improving their local area and have the energy to make a big difference in a short space of time!  Due to family and work commitments I am only able to get involved every so often.  I take part in the community events when I can and litter pick when I walk the dog.
