Can you believe it's been 20 years since the release of the movie Harry Potter & the Philosopher's Stone? To celebrate, we have pulled together a list of magical activities to do in Gloucester this month.


1. Visit Gloucester Cathedral, a Harry Potter filming location

One of the five locations making up the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, Gloucester Cathedral is a must-see on your trip to Gloucester. Take pictures in the corridors of Hogwarts, see the entrance to the Gryffindor common room, and you may even see Headless Nick roaming around!


2. Go on a virtual reality magical adventure at VRXPerience

VRXPerience is a virtual reality arcade in Gloucester, and has a range of activities that are bound to take your fancy – in particular, check out these two magical adventures to test your wizardry skills:

Magic Portal: Outdoor Escape Adventure 

Take to the streets of Gloucester city centre and solve an outdoor escape room. An GPS tracked iPad guides your team of 2-6 players around the city centre, and using a bag of gadgets and brain power, you must close the portals and save the world.

Waltz of the Wizards Virtual Reality Experience 

This game is one of more than 100 available in VRXPerience's VR Gaming Sessions. Enjoy the opportunity to cast magic spells and play with all sorts of enchanted items, becoming a real wizard! 


3. Visit Museum of Gloucester and the (Eastgate) Chamber of Secrets

To celebrate the Harry Potter anniversary, on Saturday 20 November, the Museum of Gloucester are planning a special Eastgate Chamber of Secrets, where you can visit the spectacular ruins of the Eastgate Chamber with a special magical twist. Plus, if you come dressed up on that weekend, you will receive an amazing 10% discount in the shop. Book tickets here.


4. Watch a special screening of Harry Potter & the Philosopher's Stone.

5. Take part in our #potteringloucester photo competition on social media. 

Tag us in your pictures with the hashtag #potteringloucester exploring the Harry Potter filming location, Gloucester Cathedral, and taking part in some of these magical activities the city has lined up for you this November. You could win a £100 Gift Certificate for VRXPerience (valid until the end of January 2022), a Gloucester Gift Card worth £50 with Gloucester BID, and 2 tickets to Gloucester Guildhall Cinema (valid until the end of January 2022).

6. Find the limited-edition Harry Potter books at Waterstones

To celebrate the 20th anniversary, Bloomsbury Publishing is releasing special house editions of the Harry Potter books. Let the magic of J.K. Rowling's classic Harry Potter series take you back to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.


7. Visit other film locations in the city

Gloucester’s stunning architecture is quickly becoming a firm favourite with film and TV producers. Search for the Mad Hatter in Gloucester Docks from Disney’s Alice Through the Looking Glass, discover BBC’s Sherlock Holmes solving his case in the Crypt of Gloucester Cathedral, and much more! 11. Visit the Festive Orchard Street Markets at Gloucester Quays

Taking place every weekend from the Saturday 6 November until Sunday 19 December, local makers, bakers and artisans will tempt visitors with a seasonal pick of festive food and drink, art and design, plus vintage and modern crafts at the Festive Orchard Street Markets at Gloucester Docks. 


12. Explore the Bright Nights installations

The Bright Nights programme will be taking place from November 2021 until February 2022, and includes a series of light installations that will bring colour, light and joy to the city as the nights get longer over winter. View the full programme here
