Take a trip to Gloucester Cathedral as we explore some of the exact locations featured in the Harry Potter film saga to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the launch. In this three part series, we will focus on each of the three movies that filmed in the magnificent cathedral, starting with Harry Potter & the Philosopher's Stone.

South Cloisters

The first time Gloucester Cathedral appears in the film is when Perfect Percy Weasley leads the first-year students, including Harry, Ron and Hermione, to the Gryffindor Common Room after the Sorting Hat ceremony. They walk down the South Cloister of the cathedral, which doubles as the corridors of Hogwarts.

West Cloister Door

After walking down the corridor, they reach the door to the Gryffindor Common Room where Perfect Percy Weasley introduces the students to the “Lady”, who sits in a portrait and guards the entrance. This portrait picture would have hung over the West Cloister Door.

The Lavatorium

Another scene filmed in Gloucester Cathedral for this first film is during the Halloween Feast in the Great Hall at Hogwarts. Professor Quirrell runs into the Great Hall screaming “Troll in the dungeons". Panic sets loose and all the students are escorted back to their common rooms. However, Hermione is missing, and Harry and Ron run to find her but it is too late. The scene in Gloucester Cathedral sees Harry and Ron running along the North Cloisters and then hiding behind a column in the Lavatorium when they see the troll's shadow at the end of the corridor.

Visiting this amazing filming location? We have pulled together a list of other magical activities to do in the city this November to celebrate Harry Potter's anniversary here.
