Discover 'Your Gloucester' by choosing one of the three itineraries below. From a day trip with friends to an action-packed adventure, or a heritage seekers paradise.
A day with Friends
Starting with brunch at Hubble Bubble, the cutest café for quality food and drink, catering for vegans, veggies and meat eaters, it’s perfect for groups. A welcoming place, only a stone’s throw from Gloucester's centre! After the gang are all fuelled up, venture a short walk to Gloucester Quays for a spot of shopping for those designer pieces at bargain prices.
After you’re all shopped out refuel with lunch at Greek on the Docks. The lunch menu is great value for money, a firm favourite being chicken skewers with pitta, salad and chips! The most stunning building full of historical architecture is the Guildhall. Enjoy a cinema showing here for the bargain price of about £6.
An evening of chanting for the cherry and whites at a Gloucester Rugby match is a great way to discover the city’s proud rugby heritage. or enjoy a pub evening with live music at The Fountain, Dick Whittington or Outdoor Inn.
A day of Adventure
If you’re up for a day of non stop fun, begin with a fuel up at Farmhouse Deli and then head to Trapped Escape rooms or the VR Experience where you can enjoy a spot of virtual reality. Take a walk around the Cathedral to discover Harry Potter filming locations and enjoy a picnic on the green or a pitstop at Monk’s Kitchen for a fresh lunch made with seasonal produce.
Head down to the docks and visit Gloucester's Waterways Museum to find out about life at the docks and jump onto the floating classroom or take a cruise around the waters on the Little Dunkirk.
The fun doesn’t stop there, for afters test your balance with paddle boarding, build your strength with climbing or hit the slopes at the ski centre. If you are looking for the ultimate test head down to Ninja Warrior- one of 3 locations in the UK.
After a day of non-stop fun, head to the waterside for your final challenge of tucking in to a metre long pizza at Settebello in Gloucester Docks.
A day of Discovery
With fascinating heritage, Gloucester is a hidden gem for history lovers. Begin with breakfast at Guru’s in close range to Brunswick square, which dates back to roman times when it was known as the gaudy green.
Head to the Museum of Gloucester to see original roman wall remains and visit the underground Eastgate viewing chamber- dating back to Gloucester's findings as a Roman fortress in around AD 68. I would highly recommend booking a library tour or tower tour at Gloucester Cathedral. The City’s Cathedral is the burial place of King Edward II and has been a place of Christian worship continuously for over 1,300 years. After visiting the Cathedral and it’s breath-taking cloisters take a walk through College Court to stop by at Tailor of Gloucester, this is the place where Beatrix Potter wrote her favorite book. Ponder around the well-stocked gift shop and wander around the quaint museum upstairs.
Walking up Westgate Street and onto Southgate enjoy lunch at the Old Bell/ Tigers’ Eye – the birthplace of George Whitfield which is a listed inn dating back to the 17th Century that still has the original fireplace.
Booking a tour of the King's Bastion is a must. The large metal trapdoor in the middle of King's Walk Shopping Centre leads down to the historic remains of the King's Bastion. It contains further remains of the Roman City Wall as well a superb medieval defensive tower, probably constructed during the reign of Henry III.
Download the Walking Tours App to find out more about the history of Gloucester or book onto a Civic Trust tour at St Michael’s tower. In the evening, head to Robert Raikes, the 16th Century townhouse once belonging to local philanthropist Robert Raikes, is now a quirky, city centre public house where you can find classic English pub grub.
