Bill dancing

You can hear the sticks a-clashing and there’s music in your ears.

The bells are ringing and the dancers hankies move in time.

The Folk Trail is in town. You will know, it’s a sign.

For me, there is nothing quite like seeing the Morris Dancing in the four gates on the Folk Trail Saturday. The city gives its cheery Gloucester Welcome, smiles abound, folk pause in their shopping to watch awhile before moving on. “Nice to see a bit of life in the Place” says one person as they tap their foot in time. Kids stop on their bikes, babies crane their necks around pushchairs as they go past. Teenagers stop and can’t quite believe what they are seeing, but cannot resist a little jig to the music.

For dancers Gloucester is a great place to perform as the four gates echo the sound. The setting is right, thanks to the lack of traffic, and the wide open spaces, for performers and passers-by. Dance teams are returning because they had such a good welcome the last time we were able to be live.

This year you will find teams from Gloucester, Forest of Dean, Stroud and South Gloucestershire. A variety of dance styles, Cotswold and Border, will be on display. Local side Lassington Oak, based in Highnam, will be presenting their Cotswold morris dances collected in the early 1900s by Cecil Sharp from the villages of Bledington, Adderbury, Fieldtown, Stanton Harcourt and dances from Lichfield too.

We are in Gloucester, as part of the Folk Trail, on Saturday 19th February 2022 between 11 and 3:30 around Eastgate, Westgate, Northgate and Southgate. Come and watch while you shop, or grab your coffee or lunch. Do stop and say hello to the dancers. There will be the Folk Trail programme available with all-important map so you can find the venues for singing and music. We have the finest café’s and pubs involved as well as the Guildhall, St Nicks and the Tall Ship Inn.
