Gloucester’s restaurants, coffee shops and takeaways really are a gastronomical delight, so if you would like your palate satiated, here is a little foodie tour of the City, with its wealth of authentic cuisines from around the world.
Starting in Greece with Greek on the Docks, there is simply no better location to dine when the sun is shining, situated in Gloucester Docks, you can savour a variety of authentic dishes, from a taste of the Aegean, through to the finest Moussaka and Stiffado.
Moving on to Italy, why not book a table at Gloucester Rugby’s biggest fans’ Hooker & Eight Pizza restaurant on Westgate Street. With their hand-stretched dough and Nonna Balzano’s secret recipes, one bite from an amazing selection of pizzas and calzones, and you will think you are in the Med.
With no need for a flight or lengthy delays, you can pop across the road to Thailand, and more specifically the Bangkok Canteen, a family run business, that is 100% gluten free! Working closely, with local producers, the menu will immerse you into the heart of Thailand’s capital.
Across the border from Thailand, and only a few steps away on Westgate Street, you’ll find yourself in Vietnam, Viet Yummy, a new, independent, and authentic restaurant, with a mouth-watering menu.
India is the next stop, firstly Aroma, a must visit for any lover of Indian Cuisine. You’ll find Aroma on Southgate Street with an extensive menu across many different regions. From signature plates such as Butter Chicken Masala, through to dishes that even the most versed may not have seen before, we highly recommend a visit.
Adjacent to India, why not widen your geographical foodie journey further, and book a table at the Nepalese Chef on London Road. The Chefs have worked in the finest 5-star Nepalese hotels and restaurants. and are dedicated to their menu which is bursting with spicy aromatic notes. Eat in or takeaway, the choice is yours.
With no specific country dominating their menu, Sowl Fuud is Gloucester’s only solely vegan restaurant. With burgers, curries, stews, and wraps, to list just a few of the items available, why not mix up your weekly menu and sample some plant-based heaven.
Heading across to Europe, and a favourite of ours is Spago Creperia, located opposite the LV14 SULA Lightship landmark. A unique restaurant serving authentic tapas and the most delectable crepes you ever will try, bringing a taste of Spain to Gloucester Docks. Family run, with the friendliest of hosts, there is nowhere quite like Spago. Ther's also plenty of dockside outdoor seating to soak up the sun and the views.
Still in the dock area is Warehouse 4 the amazing new Tap Room at Gloucester Brewery. Serving yourself straight from the keg, you can accompany your hand-poured beer with a bite from the different food trucks that are onsite at the weekends.
If truly British is your thing, especially in honour of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee this year, visit Lily’s Tea Room, located on the most photographed street in Gloucester, College Court. Proud bearers of ‘This England’s Finest Tea Room’ award, you’ll be tempted with everything from Seasonal Afternoon Teas to Private Dining, this is a quintessentially British delight!
If coffee shops are for you, or you prefer a lighter bite, there are so many places to choose from in the City. Hubble Bubble, Bake and Brew, Clementine’s, Jane’s Pantry, The March Hare and Guru Coffee House to name just a few. If you are lucky to visit the City more than once, make sure you sample a few.
Why not try one of Gloucester’s Gastro pubs? The Queens Head at Longford, situated between Cheltenham and Gloucester is a great place to start. Home to the famous Longford Lamb, a cosy, traditional and rustic pub, simply bursting with atmosphere and locally sourced, homemade food.
If eating out isn’t on your current schedule but stocking your kitchen is, why not pop along to Orchard Street Market, in Orchard Square on the first weekend of the month. Live music creates the atmosphere whilst you wander and sample a range of delights, from the finest regional Artisan Producers.
Gloucester’s Farmers Market is held every Friday at The Cross. Seasonal produce, fresh from the farms and fields, locally made produce such as pies and preserves, and a variety of street food vendors pack the streets from 9am until 3pm, a real experience in the heart of the city.
Or slightly out of the City, you’ll find Over Farm Market, a delicious Farm Shop. Not only family run, stocked full of the freshest and finest products, but also award winning! With free parking, a deli, a butchers, a bakers and a café, what’s not to love?
If you have a sweeter tooth, why not sample some delights from Hetty’s Kitchen in Moreland’s Match Factory, maybe buy a gift for a friend, and bag yourself some brownie points! Freshly baked brownies both the traditional and the different, with Scotch Egg Brownies also available, pop along or buy online, rumoured to be the best brownies ever!
Here at the Match Factory, you’ll also find the BBQ Society. Local meat, local breads and local legends combine to offer the very best burgers in the area. With Pulled Pork Burgers, Oklahoma Burgers and boxes crammed full of Smoked Meats, fries, slaw, and gherkins, this is definitely one to try.
Hopefully this will have whetted your appetite just a little, and you can begin your journey exploring and enjoying the many places to eat in Gloucester.
