My name is Tyler Attwood, Founder / Director of Your Next Move - a Gloucester based Community Interest Company that utilises Hip Hop culture to inspire young people through education & performance.
What is MSB all about and when did it begin?
MSB stands for Multi Style Battle, a street dance event that seeks to unite the world of street dance in Gloucester. It began in 2013.
What was your mission when you started this event?
MSB started with the following aims:
- To create a platform for exisitng street dancers within the city
- To create a place where the Gloucester street dance scene can connect with the wider UK street dance scene
- To act as a source of inspiration for the next generation of Gloucester street dancers
Gloucester has a street dance history that stretches back over the last 20 years but our scene has become quieter over the more recent years for various reasons. MSB was started to help rejuvenate our scene and help it to become one of the most exciting places for street dance in the South West.
Who is the event for?
MSB is a live experience not to be missed which can be enjoyed by people of all ages. With live dancing, live music, international battle guests, cash prizes, masterclasses with world renowned judges, performances and an infectious atmosphere that can only be experienced at a battle.
How would you describe MSB to people that aren't dancers? Or how would you describe MSB to peope who haven't been before? For those who haven't been, what can they expect?
I would describe MSB as the type of spectacle you see over social media, over television, and in films but taking place right on your doorstep. If you've seen films like 'You Got Served', 'Battle of the Year', or 'Beat Street', you've watched television shows like 'Britain's Got Talent' or 'World of Dance', or you've seen any street dance battles across Instagram, TikTok, or Youtube - you've seen something like MSB. From street dance battles to dance workshops to live music & dance performances to live Graffiti Writing displays, I believe there is at least one thing that anyone can enjoy within the event.
How long does it take to plan MSB?
Planning for MSB normally starts in the beginning of winter, with the event taking place usually the 1st week of June the following year. We will look at the styles of dance we want to incorporate, the artists we can involve within MSB from both inside the UK and further afield, how we can improve on the year before, what interesting elements can we add to the event that weren't present the year before and plan how we can engage with our local audience to make sure as many people from Gloucester can see the event as possible.
What inspired you to start MSB?
What inspired me to start MSB was the event Battle Royale that took place in Bristol, created by Kieran Warner. I saw the work that Kieran was doing to build his own street dance scene within Bristol and this inspired me to do the same within my own street dance scene in Gloucester.
An event is a great way to connect people and give people a platform, for these reasons, I decided to create MSB in 2013.
Why did you decide to start a company within this industry?
In mid-2013, mid-2014, I was fortunate enough to be supported by Unltd to continue the development of MSB. In the year of support I had from Unltd, I was able to learn about social entrepreneurship and meet inspiring people from across the UK, all working in some way in social entrepreneurship. This opportunity helped me to realise that i wanted to do more than run an annual event, I wanted to create a much larger vehicle to inspire young people in the city. This then gave birth to Team Multi Styles Battle CIC or Team MSB, known today as Your Next Move.
How did you come up with the name MSB?
I wanted to think of a name that somehow linked to battling but was also possible to be shortened in a way that would stick with people. Alongside this, the initial idea was to have multiple dance styles within each event, this then gave birth to the name Multi Styles Battle.
What are your goals for MSB in the future?
The plan is to continue to make MSB a platform for Gloucester's street dance scene, a source of inspiration for young people and a safe space for artists of all creeds to meet & network with each other. Finally our intention is to make MSB the largest street dance event within the South West.
What are your hopes for the future of Hip Hop in Gloucester?
My hopes for Hip Hop in Gloucester is that it continues to grow, the old and new generations are able to further connect and more young people are able to be inspired by the possibilities that can exisit for them within the culture.
The most recent MSB took place on 4 June. Keep your eyes peeled for furture events!
