In celebration of the opening of the International Photography Exhibition 163, we are taking a look at some of the best photography spots only a stone's throw away from the Museum of Gloucester for capturing the perfect shot.

1. Gloucester Cathedral 

What better place to start than Gloucester's historic Cathedral? The gothic architecture of the Cathedral, along with its beautiful tower and cloister garden, make this the ideal location to capture over 1300 years of history. The Lady Chapel and the West End are great locations to capture just some of the Cathedral's beauty.

2. College Court

Located right next to Gloucester Cathedral, College Court is a cosy escape from the hustle and bustle of the city centre, with this snug side street beautifully decorated with flag garlands. You will also find The House of the Tailor of Gloucester here, where Beatrix Potter created one of her most loved characters.

3. Gloucester Docks

Gloucester Docks is the ideal spot to take in Gloucester's scenic waterside location, here you can compare both the old and the new, with the huge variety of boats set against the back drop of Victorian warehouses. Mariners Church is also a popular attraction on the Docks where you can capture an Anglican church with over 150 years of history. 

4. The Folk of Gloucester

The Folk of Gloucester on Westgate Street, is a beautiful Tudor timber-framed building that is famous for being one of the first folk museums in the country. This venue is a Grade II listed building which has been around for more than 500 years, as indicated by its beautiful architecture. Don't miss the chance to take a snap of this historic building during your travels around Gloucester.

5. Alney Island Nature Reserve

Alney Island's charming wetland nature reserve is less than a kilometre away from Gloucester city centre, with plenty of wildlife to capture during your travels, including many species of birds and insects. If you time it right, you will even be able to catch the famous Severn Bore on camera.

6. Rainbow Square

The Rainbow Square was created by local artist @tashfrootko and her team of creatives, who painted 25 houses on 3 adjoining streets, Nettleton Road, St Kilda Parade, and Station Road which are linked by 2 giant murals. The rainbow crossing on Commercial Road is also a popular spot for taking photos.

7. Hillfield Gardens 

Hillfield Gardens was originally developed as the grounds of the elaborate Victorian Hillfield House built around 1867. With multiple historic buildings and a variety of trees to explore, it is one of the most treasured spots for taking snaps of Gloucester's great outdoors.

8. Blackfriars Priory 

The expansive garden which opens up as you enter this historic Priory, provides the perfect place to capture a slice of Gloucester's history. You will see the enchanting North Range which is an award-winning wedding destination as well as the Scriptorium, an ancient spot steeped in heritage.

9. Greyfriars

The remains of this Franciscan house is of particular interest for photographers, due to its architectural features making it one of the most unique landmarks in the country. This location is a valued English Heritage site that allows you to capture the history of the friars.

10. Llanthony Secunda Priory

The grounds of Llanthony Secunda Priory provide a quiet place away from the bustling city, as it is located right next to Gloucester Docks. The Medieval ruins, which contain some of the earliest Medieval and Tudor brickwork, allow you to capture the remarkable architecture of this historic site.
