Dare we say it, but half term is looking amazing, and we don’t just mean because the sun appears to have its hat firmly in place, but because there is soooo much going on in and around Gloucester!

Soldier Skills Challenge – 27 May – 4 June
To join the army you need to be strong of mind and body!
So this half term head over to the Soldiers of Gloucester Museum and take part in their Soldier Skills Trail that will test both of these skills. It culminates with their brand-new child friendly shooting test!
This activity is aimed at children aged 6-12.
On Monday 29 May there will be a Redcoat soldier re-enactor who can tell you even more about being in the army, and on Tuesday 30 May they have their team outside (11-1) who will be testing your skills even more.
These activities are free with paid museum entry.

The RPS International Photography Exhibition | IPE 163
Don’t miss it before this exhibition of stunning photographs ends on the 4 June.
The International Photography Exhibition (IPE) is the world’s longest running photography exhibition. Now in its 163rd edition, the IPE 163 is a powerful presentation that demonstrates the breadth of contemporary image-making and storytelling today.
The IPE 163 explores themes of identity, cultural heritage, global societal issues, gender politics, mental health, the natural world, and the human condition. The selected work pays particular attention to the personal impacts of the pandemic, capturing hardship, grief, resilience, and hope.

With the forecast looking good, and the fact that this film is quite simply brilliant, what better way to spend an evening enjoying an al fresco cinema experience?

Gloucester Civic Trust Parade - The Folk of Gloucester – 27 May
Gloucester Civic Trust is celebrating 50 years of saving Gloucester's old buildings from being demolished and offering guided tours to visitors and residents of this historic city.
Members will be parading through the city, with live music, to promote their Jubilee. Please come and cheer them on or feel free to join in if you like!
The Parade will end up at The Folk of Gloucester, their latest project, which is a row of three timber framed Tudor buildings, and definitely worth a visit.
Mission Support Day – 27 May
Join the Midlands Air Ambulance team at their Gloucester shop, located in Eastgate Shopping Centre, for an open day which includes FREE activities for the whole family.
Learn lifesaving skills, take part in a Q&A with the crew, enter a colouring competition, and discover work and volunteering opportunities are available.

Gloucester's Cheese Rolling - 29 May
Now officially an extreme sport, Cheese-rolling has competitors heading to Gloucester from all over the world. The Cooper’s Hill Cheese Roll is an annual race held at Cooper's Hill, near Brockworth, Gloucester. It attracts people from around the globe who come to chase a Double Gloucester cheese down the 200-yard-long hill.
Thousands will flock to see this world famous event, which started in the 1800s, visitors come from all over the world to spectate on a 3-4kg Double Gloucester Cheese, speeding down the hill, at up to 70km per hour, with participants throwing caution to the wind, and literally throwing themselves down the hill chasing it!
A bonkers event, but one not to miss! The event starts at 12pm.
Jonathan’s Jungle Roadshow – 31 May
On Wednesday 31 May Jonathan's Jungle Roadshow will be at The National Waterways Musuem for two, 90-minute informative sessions at 11am and 1pm.
You will get up close and personal with some absolutely incredible reptiles and invertebrates, the sessions sold out last time so book now to secure your place!
Tickets are £6 per child which includes up to one adult for free. Any additional adults will need to buy a ticket as space is limited.

May Half-Term Activities at Nature in Art – 31 May – 2 June
Get the kids crafty and creative this half term, and book them on to one of the Nature in Art Activity Sessions, there are two sessions per day.
Wednesday 31st May – Batik.
You will use hot wax to draw designs and then fabric paints to colour the designs.
Thursday 1st June – Magazine Beads.
Children will learn how to make beads out of strips of magazines and then use these to make bracelet/necklace/pictures.
Friday 2nd June – Weaving with wool and pompom making.
Children will learn how to weave with wool. Then they will make pompoms to dangle from their woven piece.
£8 per child (This includes entry for child and 1 adult into the Museum).
*Children under 8 must be accompanied by an adult. *

Roman Soldier Tour of the Eastgate Chamber – 31 May
Join auxiliary Roman soldier Lucius for a fascinating visit underground to the Eastgate chamber to see how and why the original City walls were built and what happened to them through the centuries.

Gloucester Storytelling Café – 1 June
Saffy and Jane Springham are pleased to have started running a monthly Storytelling Café at The Folk. The Café is on every first Thursday of the month from 7pm for ages 14+.
There will be invited guest storytellers, music and open mic every month. We want to hear all kinds of storytelling – so whether you enjoy traditional, real life, original works, narrative poems or flash fiction there will be something for everyone! Oral telling and written tales, beginners and experienced performers alike are welcome.

The Not-So-Secret Book Club – 1 June
‘Read With Me’ will be at Gloucester Cathedral on Thursday 1 June for a special edition of the 'Not So Secret Book Club', there will also be some Cathedral inspired crafts to enjoy, and suitable for all ages.
There will be free books available for everyone, as well as story time and other fun activities. A great way to entertain the kids, from tinies to teens, during half-term!
The session will take place between 12noon-3pm in the Chapter House of the Cathedral. It is free to take part with no advance booking required - just turn up!

Decorate your own magnifying glass at the Museum then make your way to the Blackfriars Medieval Priory on a walk inspired by nature followed by some recycled art making!

Located at the stunning Gloucester Quays, the monthly Orchard Street Market offers a great mix of delicious, locally sourced food and drink, artisan arts and crafts, jewellery, homeware, plants and seasonal goods, plus amazing street food and bars.

Llanthony Open Day – 4 June
Monthly open days at Llanthony Secunda Priory are a must do, step inside the listed buildings to see the newly refurbished spaces and find out more about the events and people that shaped Llanthony's history, including an Archbishop of Canterbury, and King Henry VII.
Set in stunning grounds, alongside the docks, a perfect setting, why not take a picnic and make a day of it whilst the weather is on our side, or grab a bite to eat from our delicious and many eateries in the City.

Race for Life Gloucester – 4 June
Starting at 10 am in Gloucester Park, this year’s Race for Life looks set to be incredible.
The original and most popular Race for Life event, the 5k is an entry level distance and an achievable first challenge for most abilities.
The 5k is just over 3 miles and can take about an hour to complete on average, but there's no pressure to finish in a certain time.
Run, walk or jog at your own pace to fund life-saving cancer research.
If you are taking part then a huge good luck from us, and if you aren’t head on over to support the race goers!!
