In its fourth year, the Gloucester Festival of Archaeology has celebrated some of the hidden features of Gloucester from Eastgate Chamber to the Undercrofts of Westgate Street. This Saturday the 27th of July is the Crescendo moment of the city-wide Festival with Festival Day. The aim of Festival day is to encourages visitors and residents to explore the city and gain a greater understanding of what lies beneath.


Steeped in over 2,000 years of history, Gloucester has plenty to lure budding archaeologists young and old, much of which is hidden underfoot and above the eye-line.

Explore Gloucester’s ‘hidden’ history with lots to see and do, including:

  • A 3D archaeology trail which gives you a chance to peer into the ground and get some amazing pics at the same time.
  • FREE activities at Gloucester Cathedral on Festival Day the 27th of July include a Miniature dig and washing station, Photography Treasure hunt and sketching station.
  • FREE Activities at The Folk of Gloucester on Festival Day the 27th of July include Brass Rubbing, Finding the bones on the skeleton and much more.
  • Cuddly Science Presents Amazing Archaeology and Fantastic Fossils, come and uncover treasure in our sand pit dig, explore real archaeological finds, find out about mud larking and metal detecting, or investigate how fossils and historical artefacts are preserved! Make sediment bottles, dress up as a historical character and more! Suitable for all ages and abilities.

Marc Waters, Event Coordinator at The Folk of Gloucester and Trustee of Gloucester Civic Trust, who is organising the festival, commented: “The festival day is the crescendo moment of the festival with lots of activities to excite and interest families of all ages. This is the perfect excuse to come and explore the city and get a taste of the amazing history that the city has. Gloucester Archaeology Festival is organised by Gloucester Civic Trust in partnership with Gloucester Cathedral and several organisations in Gloucester. Working together to bring a host of activities that are designed to encourage everyone to explore the city for the day through a range of fun and low-cost activities.
