Viewers of the BBC medieval drama The Mirror and the Light, about the rise and fall of Thomas Cromwell, may have spotted Gloucester Cathedral in the background.
The second series of Booker Prize-winning author Hilary Mantel’s trilogy starring Damian Lewis and Mark Ryland featured the cathedral in several scenes.
Its distinctive Gothic architecture features in one scene where Cromwell visits the daughter of his mentor, Cardinal Wolsey.
The production crew was assisted by Gloucester City Council’s Film Gloucester initiative. The project was set up to promote the city as a filming location and to provide support with filming permissions, locations, and advice.
The city attracts over 15 bookings per year, which it hopes to increase. It has been used for various projects, including documentaries, promotional content, films, and TV shows.
Gloucester can be seen in TV series’ such as The Famous Five, Alex Rider, and Catherine Called Birdy, directed by Lena Dunham, along with several other feature films set for release this year.
Councillor Caroline Courtney, Cabinet Member for Culture and Leisure at Gloucester City Council, said: “The city boasts a wealth of historic and unique buildings, and we receive a lot of interest from film crews, which is something we are keen to grow. Filming not only attracts visitors and investment, but it also allows us to share our beautiful city with viewers across the world.”
