In What's On

The much-anticipated Festival of Archaeology returns to Gloucester in July 2025, promising an exciting programme of events celebrating the city’s rich and diverse history.

Organised in partnership with a range of city centre venues and charities, the festival will bring together Gloucester Cathedral, Gloucester Civic Trust, Museum of Gloucester, Gloucester BID, Bristol and Gloucestershire Archaeological Society (BGAS), and Gloucestershire Archaeology (GlosArch) to create an immersive and engaging experience for visitors of all ages.
As one of the highlights of Gloucester’s cultural calendar, the Festival of Archaeology will feature guided tours, hands-on excavation experiences, family-friendly workshops, expert talks, and special exhibitions that explore the city’s fascinating past, from its Roman origins to its medieval grandeur and beyond. The event will showcase the invaluable work of local historians, archaeologists, and heritage organisations, offering rare insights into Gloucester’s evolving landscape.

A Celebration of Gloucester’s Heritage
The Festival of Archaeology aims to make history accessible to everyone, whether they are long-time enthusiasts or newcomers eager to learn more about the city’s past. With events hosted across multiple historic locations, attendees will have the opportunity to explore hidden aspects of Gloucester’s history through interactive and educational experiences.

A Collaborative Effort
This year’s festival is made possible by a strong partnership between local heritage and cultural organisations, working together to bring Gloucester’s history to life. With the support of Gloucester Cathedral, Gloucester Civic Trust, Museum of Gloucester, Gloucestershire Archives, Gloucester BID, BGAS, GlosArch, and others, the event will highlight the city’s significance as a centre of archaeological and historical importance.

Canon Rebecca Lloyd, Director of Learning and Participation at Gloucester Cathedral, said, “We are delighted to be part of Gloucester’s Festival of Archaeology once again this summer. Gloucester has such a long and rich history, much of which has left traces in the buildings we love all around us and in the ground beneath our feet. It’s great to be able to offer such a range of inclusive, informative and fun activities for people of all ages to come and learn more about our wonderful city and the heritage we all own in it.”
