During the holidays, my friends from uni have come to visit me in Gloucester, so I wanted to share an overview of how we spent our time when they visited.
Half a day
With tickets to a concert at Gloucester Guildhall in the evening, my friends and I thought that we would make the most of it and spend the afternoon in Gloucester before heading to the concert. We got into the city just in time for a late lunch, and headed to Guru Coffee House. Guru is dog-friendly, so we made friends with the dog at the table next to us while we ate our burgers.
Then, once we had finished, we walked about 5 minutes to Trapped Escape Rooms, where we were booked into one of their escape rooms as we had always wanted to try one. As we are students, we were even able to get a student discount. Once we had finished in the escape room, we decided to have a wander around the city, as we had heard that there had been several films and tv shows filmed in Gloucester, and we wanted to check out the filming locations. My friend is a big fan of Sherlock and Dr Who, so we made sure to head to Gloucester Cathedral, where both of those programmes filmed, and Gloucester Docks, where Dr Who was filmed in the North Quay.
While we were wandering around, we stopped at Clementine for a quick caffeine boost, as well as popping into a few independent shops, such as The Candle Tree and Chez Rose. Once we’d finished on our little filming locations tour of the city, we decided to have something to eat so we headed to Hooker & Eight for a fresh, handmade pizza.
Once we had eaten our pizzas, it was time to head to the Guildhall for our concert, so we made our way across the centre of town, arriving in plenty of time to pick up some drinks from the bar before the concert started.
One day
I began the day by meeting my friends at the transport hub, as they were all visiting from different places. Having heard about VRXPERIENCE online, we decided to head there to test out some of the virtual reality experiences. Since we had allowed ourselves lots of time, we were able to try the Virtual Reality Gaming, the Virtual Reality Racing, and a 9D VR Roller-Coaster. All of them were great fun, but the 9D VR Roller-Coaster was definitely my favourite.
Once we’d finished with the VR experiences, we noticed that they also offered outdoor escape adventures. As none of my friends are local to Gloucester, I thought that this would be a fun way to introduce them to the city. At this point though, we were all quite hungry, so we decided to go and have some lunch before starting the adventure. As it was a nice day, we picked up some lunch from Janes Pantry on Westgate Street and ate it in the garden area outside Gloucester Cathedral.
When we had finished eating, we headed back to VREXPERIENCE to begin our outdoor escape adventure. We chose ‘Operation Mindfall’, where we had to find an antidote to a mind-controlling virus, and it was a great way to explore the city centre. After completing the adventure, we walked to the Rainbow Street, which is about a 15-minute walk from the centre of Gloucester, to take some pictures, as the rainbow houses made a great background.
We then walked back through the city centre to the Quays, where we went to Gloucester Brewery’s Warehouse 4, Gloucestershire’s first self-serve bar. After a couple of drinks there, we moved over to TANK, which is also managed by Gloucester Brewery, for some pizza. At the end of the evening, we headed back to the transport hub, so that my friends could make their way home.
Two days
Day 1
My friends and I all enjoy being active, so we decided to have an action-packed day for our first day in Gloucester. Firstly, we headed out to Gloucester Ski & Snowboard Centre for a tubing session.
After catching the bus back to the city centre, we walked to Gloucester Docks and grabbed some lunch at On Toast, a café which serves everything on toast. Carrying on with our activity-filled day, we then enjoyed a Karting Track Driving Experience at JDR Karting, as well as two intense games of Lasertag!
As we were still near the Docks, we headed back there to find somewhere to eat, and ended up at Greek on the Docks, which had a lovely waterfront view. For our final activity of the day, we took part in a Paranormal Investigation at Gloucester Prison, before heading to Café René for some drinks and live music.
Day 2
After a busy first day, we decided to have a more relaxing day for our second day in Gloucester. We stopped at Hubble Bubble, where they serve all-day brunch, for a full English breakfast, before walking to Gloucester Quays for some shopping.
After some much-needed retail therapy, we headed to Five Guys for lunch for some burgers. Then, to continue our relaxed day, we went to Cineworld in Gloucester Quays to watch a movie. Finally, we had dinner at Wagamama, before heading home.
