About
An exhibition exploring home, belonging, and identity through the powerful symbol of hair.
The Strength of Women – Hair, Home & Belonging, is an immersive and thought-provoking exhibition celebrating International Women's Day 2025 at Gloucester Museum.
This event is a tribute to the resilience, identity, and cultural heritage of women—with a special focus on Afro-Caribbean, British, and diverse cultural backgrounds. Through the symbolic lens of hair, we explore the deep connections between self-expression, belonging, and empowerment.
For centuries, hair has been more than just a feature of appearance—it has been a statement of strength, resistance, and pride. From the natural Afro of the 1960s symbolizing Black empowerment to the intricate braids and headscarves passed down through generations, women have used hair to navigate societal expectations, reclaim their identities, and assert their autonomy. In this exhibition, we invite you to reflect on what "Home" and "Belonging" mean in the context of womanhood.
Through art, storytelling, poetry, and live performances, we honour the personal and collective journeys of women who have shaped history and continue to inspire change. As we mark International Women's Day 2025, under the theme "Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress", let us celebrate the power of inclusion, diversity, and cultural pride—because when women thrive, communities thrive. The doors are always open. Welcome to a space where every woman's story matters.
